By Fidan Babayeva - Trend:

Honey prices in Azerbaijan may drop sharply by the end of 2020, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Beekeepers Association Badraddin Hasratov told Trend.

“Due to complete cessation of honey exports since the beginning of the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the country, farmers can lower prices for honey till the end of the year to 15 manat ($8.82) per kilogram in order to prevent loss of production,” Hasratov said.

“Currently, prices for honey in Azerbaijan vary from 25 manat ($14.7) to 30 manat ($17.6) per kilogram, as a year earlier,” he added.

Touching upon the issue of increasing production, the chairman said that the number of bee colonies in Azerbaijan has increased to 500,000 units.

“Over the past two years, the number of bee colonies has grown from 270,000 to 500,000. This is a very good trend, because it is not just about increasing production. The more bee colonies there are, the more positive their impact on the environment and public health will be. The more efficiently the pollination process takes place, the more trees bloom and bear fruit. The development of beekeeping is beneficial for many areas,” the chairman added.

The Azerbaijan Beekeepers Association was established in early 2016. Currently, the association unites 10,000 beekeepers and entrepreneurs in 50 regions of the country - 46 farms in districts and 4 farms in cities.

The main goals of the association are the development of beekeeping, solving the current problems of beekeepers and the development of a general concept for the development of beekeeping.
