BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 1

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

The signing of a contract for the provision of services for the creation of the Baiterek space rocket complex brought the project to a practical level, a representative of ROSCOSMOS told Trend.

The agreement signed on December 22, 2004 by the heads of the governments of Russia and Kazakhstan defines the basic conditions for cooperation between the parties in the creation and joint use of a new environmentally friendly Baiterek space rocket complex.

The complex is being created on the basis of the existing infrastructure of the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan in order to carry out commercial space programs and projects, as well as to implement the national space programs of Kazakhstan and Russia.

The contract for services for creation of the Baiterek space rocket complex to ensure the launches of 'Soyuz-5' launch rockets was signed between Russian Center for Operation of Space Ground Based Infrastructure and Baiterek JSC at the end of October 2020.

After that, in November 2020, reconnaissance work was carried out at the facilities of the Baikonur Cosmodrome in order to assess the technical condition of the units and systems of technological equipment.

"The next step is the development of a preliminary design for the Baiterek space rocket complex, the development of which has already begun," the corporation noted.

ROSCOSMOS said that despite some external factors (including the impact of COVID-19), in general, the Baiterek project is being implemented in accordance with the timeframe agreed by the parties.

Earlier this year Kazakhstan and Russia agreed on the main issues regarding the Baiterek joint project. The agreements were reached during a meeting of Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Askar Mamin and ROSCOSMOS Director General Dmitry Rogozin.

The ROSCOSMOS report said that basic issues of launching the Baiterek joint project were agreed upon during the meeting. The agreements provide for the creation of the 'Soyuz-5' launch complex at Baikonur.

Kazakhstan’s Baikonur city is the administrative and living center of major Baikonur Cosmodrome. The city and the Cosmodrome together create a Baikonur complex, which Russia is renting from Kazakhstan till 2050.
