Georgia, Finland to strengthen bilateral economic and commercial ties

Finland's imports from Georgia have increased by more than 50 percent from January through September 2020, Director of the Unit for Eastern Europe and Central Asia Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland Ms. Sirpa Oksanen told Trend.

"At the same time, exports are down by 20 percent when compared to the same period (January-September) in 2019," Oksanen noted.

According to her, overall, the trade turnover between the two countries is down by 18 percent.

"Notwithstanding the effects of COVID-19, there is ample room for strengthening bilateral economic and commercial ties including trade," Oksanen added.

Finland recognized Georgia on 27 March 1992. Diplomatic relations established on 8 July 1992.

The Georgian government cooperates with Finland in several areas. The legal framework drawn up between the governments of the two countries covers three agreements. It regulates cooperation in such matters as environmental protection, investment promotion, and development cooperation, as well as issues related to double taxation and tax evasion.

Relations between Georgia and Finland are developing in both political and trade, economic and educational spheres.

Finnish business is quite active in the telecommunications market in Georgia. It should be noted the activities of the Swedish-Finnish giant Telia Sonera, which owns 100 percent of the shares of Geocell.
