Uzbekistan’s shuttle trade completely drops in 2020

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 17

By Klavdiya Romakayeva - Trend:

The volume of shuttle trade in Uzbekistan in the second and third quarters in 2020 amounted to zero, Trend reports with reference to the data of the Central Bank of Uzbekistan.

Shuttle trade is transactions for the purchase of goods for resale in the country (or abroad) by persons traveling.

Since the borders were closed, there was no active trade, hence the decrease. Shuttle trade volumes in the first nine months in Uzbekistan amounted to only $89 million.

Shuttle trade volume by this time last year in Uzbekistan amounted to $375.8 million. The shuttle trade has been declining for several years - in 2018, for example, in the first half of the year it stood at $607.6 million.

Two years ago, shuttle traders carried import/export operations worth some $1 billion. The bulk of the volume came from imports - shuttle traders imported goods worth $842.9 million into the country, and exported goods worth $213.2 million. But even then, by the end of the year, a decrease in volumes began, which coincided with a tightening of the norms for duty-free import of goods.
