Azerbaijan's north-west region finishes tobacco leaf harvest

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 28

By Fidan Babayeva - Trend:

Harvest of tobacco leaf on the fields belonging to Azerbaijan's Azertutun Agro-Industrial Complex LLC in districts of the country’s north-west region has finished, Trend reports on Dec.28 citing the company.

According to the company, during the season, farmers received 14,773 tons of green tobacco from the tobacco production and processing stations operating in Balakan, Zagatala, Gakh, and Shaki districts.

Some 2,380 tons of raw tobacco were produced at the processing stations and collected at the storehouses this year.

“During the season, 262 tobacco drying chambers have been operating at the processing stations in the above districts. The advantage of these chambers is that the green tobacco mass is delivered from the fields directly to the site and placed in the chambers,” said the company. “The tobacco producers have already been relieved of such complicated and laborious work like cutting a green tobacco leaf. Up to 8 tons of green tobacco mass can be simultaneously placed in each chamber. The tobacco drying process takes 7-8 days. After this process is completed, the dry tobacco is packed and sent to the factory for further processing."

The president approved the state program "On the development of the production of tobacco and tobacco products in Azerbaijan" on August 10, 2017. It is scheduled for 2017-2021.

One of its main goals is to increase the yield of tobacco up to 20 centners per hectare, expand the cultivated areas envisaged for tobacco to 6,000 hectares and increase the production volumes to 12,000 tons of tobacco.
