BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb.17

By Fidan Babayeva - Trend:

The mutual food trade between Russia and Azerbaijan grew by 6 percent and amounted to $1.3 billion in 2020, Trend reports on Feb.17 referring to the Russian Trade Mission in Azerbaijan.

According to the mission, the development of bilateral relations in the field of the agro-industrial complex (AIC) became the topic of the meeting of the Russian-Azerbaijani working group on agricultural cooperation, which was held at the Russian Ministry of Agriculture.

The event was chaired by the deputy ministers of agriculture of the two countries, the working group co-chairs Sergey Levin and Elchin Zeynalov.

As the mission noted, the volume of trade between Azerbaijan and Russia has increased almost one and a half times over the past five years.

"Azerbaijan is one of the ten largest buyers of domestic agricultural goods. The value of exports of agricultural products from Russia last year increased by 12 percent to $698 million. At the same time, Russia has the potential to further increase the supply of wheat, confectionery, poultry meat, sausages, canned vegetables, margarine, and sauces," the mission said.

According to Levin, a plenipotentiary representative of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture will be sent to Azerbaijan by the end of this year to strengthen the position of domestic agricultural products in the Azerbaijani market.

The meeting parties discussed the expansion of trade in agricultural products, cooperation in the field of veterinary and phytosanitary supervision, the implementation of investment projects, as well as interaction in the field of registration of plant varieties and the testing activities.

"During the meeting, special attention was paid to the supply of tomatoes and apples from Azerbaijan. Currently, shipments of these products from most of the enterprises have already been permitted, and the work of the relevant structures of the two countries in this direction continues," added the mission.
