Iran unveils data on fishing in Gilan Province

About 5,600 tons of kilka were caught from the Caspian Sea in the Gilan Province (northern Iran) from October 11, 2020 to March 20, 2021, Director General of the Fisheries Department for Gilan Province, Azim Modabberi said, Trend reports citing the department‘s website.

Modabberi noted that kilka fishing increased by 16 percent compared to the previous period.

The official added that the value of caught kilka was 1.23 trillion rials (about $29.3 million) and was caught by 214 fishermen on 30 ships.

“Furthermore, 1,330 tons of bony fish were caught in the province over the reporting period. This is an increase of 4 percent compared to the previous period. About 49 percent of bony fish caught was accounted for kutum, 46 percent – mullet, 1 percent – carp and 4 percent – other fish species,” he said.

Modabberi emphasized that the value of caught bony fish was 1.2 trillion rials (about $28.7 million) and was caught by 400 fishermen. The volume of caught bony fish is estimated to reach 2,000 tons over the next two weeks.

According to the director-general, 861 tons of sturgeon meat and about 5.45 thousand kilograms of caviar were seized from sturgeon farms in Iran's Gilan Province within the mentioned period. This is an increase of 31 percent and 43 percent, respectively, compared to the previous period.

As reported, there are 67 sturgeon farms in Iran's Gilan Province.
