Iran exports most of its saffron

Iran produces about 500 tons of saffron a year and exports most of it, the Deputy Head of Central Organization for Rural Cooperatives (CORC) of Iran, Trend reports citing Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.

According to Motamed, about 30 tons of saffron produced in Iran is used domestically, and the rest is exported to European and Asian countries.

"Iran accounts for minimum 90 percent of world saffron production. However, the main income from the sale of this product goes to foreign companies. These companies sell Iranian saffron in small packages and with their brands on world markets," he added.

The deputy head noted that the CORC purchased 18 tons of saffron from farmers under a guaranteed basis to regulate market prices over last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021). While in the preceding Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 through March 19, 2020) about 72 tons of saffron were purchased from farmers.

Motamed said that the organization purchased saffron from farmers until the price of saffron returned to normal in the market.
