Azerbaijan seeks to expand its capabilities in mechanical engineering - expert

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 5

By Fidan Babayeva – Trend:

Azerbaijan seeks to expand its capabilities in mechanical engineering and upgrade the technologies used, Deputy Director of the International Institute of Energy Policy and Diplomacy of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), expert of the Center for Sustainable Development of MGIMO Igbal Guliyev told Trend.

According to Guliyev, Azerbaijani districts liberated from the Armenian occupation as a result of the Second Karabakh War from late Sept. through early Nov.2020 have good conditions for creating machine-building enterprises.

"Up to date, the mechanical engineering industry has been significantly developing in Azerbaijan, which is confirmed by the great demand for the country's oil and gas equipment, meeting international standards, in Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan," he said. "In 2020, machinery and equipment, cars, trailers, and semitrailers worth 352.2 million manat ($207.1 million) were produced in Azerbaijan. Compared to 2019, the production of machinery and equipment grew by 35.7 percent, and other vehicles - by 47 percent."

Besides, according to the expert, the events of 2020 related to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the end of the Second Karabakh War demonstrated the correctness of the course chosen by the Azerbaijani leadership for large-scale economic reforms aimed at developing the national economy.

"Thus, in the current situation, Azerbaijan is also moving from a crisis to a period of adaptation and is making up a post-conflict and post-pandemic agenda," added Guliyev.
