Iran and Afghanistan had an initial agreement for $5.3-billion investment in Afghanistan's technical services and transportation infrastructure projects, said Iranian advisor to Minister of Road and Urban Development Seyyed Hossein Mirshafie, Trend reports via IRNA.

Mirshafie said Iran should follow up on this investment, as well as export engineering and technical services to Afghanistan.

"A memorandum of understanding is being drafted for development of housing units in Afghanistan and Iran's private sector is participating in construction in Afghanistan," he said.

Mirshafie said the mentioned investment is oriented for big cities of Afghanistan, such as Kabul, Herat, Kandahar.

"It is estimated that Iranian investors would invest in construction of 5,000 to 10,000 housing units, with participation of Afghan companies," he said.

"The Herat-Mazar Sharif railway project in north of Afghanistan is one of the investment projects that would be done by Iran's private sector, with an estimated $2.2-billion investment. The railway route can connect Iran to Central Asia and China," he said.
