Iran Fisheries Organization prepares program on renewing of fishing boats

The Iran Fisheries Organization has prepared a five-year program to renew and repair fishing boats, the Director-General for Fishing Affairs of Iran Fisheries Organization, Mokhtar Akhondi said, Trend reports referring to the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.

According to Akhondi, these boats have been operating for more than 20 years. According to the program, 200-300 units of launch (boat) will be renewed or repaired per year.

“There are currently 11,500 fishing boats operating in Iran. Of these, 3,400 units are launch (boat), 8,000 units are boats and 125 units are large vessels,” he added.

The director general noted that most boats operate in the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and the Indian Ocean. About 800 boats are engaged in fishing in the Indian Ocean. Meanwhile, a small number of boats are engaged in fishing in the Caspian Sea.

Akhondi said that a total of 715,000 tons of fish were caught by 140,000 fishermen over the last Iranian year (March 20, 2020, through March 20, 2021).
