Iran's sprat fishing in Caspian Sea increases

The volume of sprat caught by Iran in the Caspian Sea increased by 8 percent, during the first nine months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through December 21, 2021), compared to the same period last Iranian year, Director-General for Fishing Affairs of Iran Fisheries Organization, Mokhtar Akhondi said, Trend reports referring to the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.

The director general noted that Iran has caught a total of 13,419 tons of sprat off the coast of Gilan and Mazandaran provinces within the mentioned period.

He also added that 63 percent of sprat were caught in Mazandaran Province and 37 percent in Gilan Province.

Akhondi stressed that 74 ships have been operating in the sprat fishing in the country.

He noted that 44 of the ships belong to Mazandaran Province, while 30 to Gilan Province.

According to him, more than 90 percent of the sprat caught is used for fish powder production. Currently, 1 kg of sprat is sold for 65,000-66,000 rials (about $1.54-$1.57) for fish powder production and 95,000-110,000 rials (about $2.26-$2.61) for consumption.
