Iran and UK barter deal is unlikely - official

TEHRAN, Iran, Feb.7

Trend:

Applying the barter system in Iran and Britain trade is unlikely without improving Iran's oil export condition, the Chairman of Iran and Britain Chamber of Commerce Amir Houshang Amini told Trend in an interview.

"Iran and the UK's import and export does not have the potential to implement barter deal perhaps this mechanism would be applicable in small-scale trade," he said.

The possible agreement in the Vienna negotiations would open a path for trade between Iran and other countries.

the Chairman of the Iran-UK Chamber of commerce went on to say that the two countries had indirect trade during the first ten months of the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2021) via Dubai, Pakistan, and Turkey.

Iran's exported goods to the UK was valued at about $30 million while it has imported more than $60 million worth of goods from the UK," Amini explained.

According to Amini, Iran imported 468 items of goods from the UK in 2020 while it exported more than 336 items to Britain. The imports were essential goods including livestock feed, press cake, corn, sugar, medicine, polyethylene sheets, spare parts for laboratories.

The UK has re-exported major parts of its products from Turkey, Dubai, and Pakistan to Iran. Iran's direct export to the UK included machinery, industrial materials, screw and bolt, food products such as saffron.
