Iran to tax vacant homes

TEHRAN, Iran, April 13. Iran is starting vacancy tax for approximately 2.5 million homes, said the Minister of Road and Urban Development Rostam Ghasemi, Trend reports citing Mehr News Agency.

"According to real estate and housing system statistics, 540,000 vacant homes received notification via text message and some have paid the tax," he said.

He went on to say that the following system has identified the residential status of 65 million Iranians and the precise number of vacant homes is unknown but it has been estimated to be 2.5 million.

Iran’s law on empty homes was enacted in 2021 after the country’s Constitutional Council. The tax aims to help improve the renting market in Iran.
