Iran to boost fish farming in Lorestan Province

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 23. Iran’s Lorestan Province fish farming potential will exceed 35,000 tons annually, over the next Iranian year (March 21, 2023 through March 19, 2024), Director General of the Lorestan Province Fisheries Department Kiyarash Biranvand said, Trend reports referring to the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.

“At present, the annual fish farming potential in the province is 30,000 tons,” Biranvand said.

The director general also added that currently, several sturgeon farms are being established in the province. In this regard, investors will be attracted. Thus, it is forecasted that 50-100 tons of sturgeon will be grown annually in the Lorestan Province in the coming years.

According to him, in order to develop fish farming in the province, the Iranian government allocated 2 trillion rials (about $47.6 million) last Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022).

At present, Iran's production capacity of fish and related products is about 1.27 million tons per year. About 715,000 tons of it is obtained by fishing, while 555,000 tons - are by fish farming.
