BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 17. In total, 225,000 tons of pistachios were harvested from 424,000 hectares of orchards in Iran in the current Iranian year (March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023), an official of the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture Jihad Darioush Salempour told IANA, Trend reports.

According to Salempour, there are 534,000 hectares of pistachio orchards in Iran. Of this, 424,000 hectares are productive and 110,000 hectares are unproductive.

“Approximately 20 percent of the country's orchards accounted for pistachio orchards. The country's pistachio orchards are mainly in Iran’s Kerman, Razavi Khorasan, Yazd, Fars, South Khorasan, Semnan, Markazi, Qom, Qazvin, Sistan and Baluchestan, Tehran and Isfahan provinces,” he said.

The official also noted that various reasons, including climate change, drought, etc., have resulted in a decline in pistachio production. In order to increase the pistachio production in the country, a number of steps are being taken within the framework of several plans. As a result, pistachio production will increase by 20-100 percent, while water consumption will decrease by 25-50 percent.

Salempour added that Iran exported 135,000 tons of pistachios worth $915 million in the last Iranian year (March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022).
