BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 6. In general, 156 million tons of agricultural products are currently cultivated in Iran annually, Iranian Deputy Minister of Agriculture Jihad Alireza Mohajer said at a press conference, Trend reports citing IANA.

The deputy minister noted that about 88 million tons of the country's agricultural production accounted for crops.

Mohajer added that for example, so far, more than 11 million tons of wheat, 3.2 million tons of barley, 3.2 million tons of rice, and more than 600,000 tons of other cereal products were cultivated in the country during the current Iranian year (March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023).

According to him, a number of steps are being taken to increase the cultivation of various agricultural products in Iran over the next Iranian year (March 21, 2023 through March 19, 2024).

“So, the focus is on increasing the cultivation of cotton, wheat and other products. Also, Iran may reduce imports of certain agricultural products such as rapeseed and cotton by increasing production in this area,” he said.

As for Iran’s agricultural exports, the minister pointed out that Iran's annual income from the export of greens and vegetables is approximately $1.3 billion. With the implementation of the various programs, Iran can increase its annual exports to $2 billion.

In total, Iran imported 31 million tons of goods worth $48.5 billion within the first 10 months of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2022 through January 20, 2023).

This is an increase of 16.8 percent in value, while a decrease of 6 percent in volume compared to the same period last Iranian year.

Iran mainly imported essential products, including corn, rice, soybeans, wheat, sunflower oil, barley, compressed soybeans and etc. during the reporting period.
