BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 15. Iran launched a hydroponic greenhouse for growing strawberries in Urmia County of West Azerbaijan Province in the north-west of the country, on February 15, 2023, Head of the Agricultural Department of West Azerbaijan Province, Khosrov Shahbazi said, Trend reports citing IANA.

Shahbazi noted that the mentioned greenhouse was built on an area of 1,400 square meters (0.14 hectares) at the cost of 43 billion rials (about $1.02 million).

He added that 14 tons of strawberries will possibly be grown in this greenhouse per year. Four people were provided with jobs with the launch of this greenhouse.

The official said that there are 220 active greenhouses with an area of 61.5 hectares are operating in 16 counties of West Azerbaijan Province. Some 615 people work in greenhouses.

According to him, cucumbers, tomatoes, strawberries, herbal plants, flowers, decorative plants, etc. are mainly grown in the province's greenhouses.

“In total, it has been determined that it is possible to build new greenhouses in the area of 1,225 hectares in the province from the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2022) to date,” the official also pointed out.

Iran's West Azerbaijan province has 700,000 hectares of arable land and 115,000 hectares of horticulture land. More than 6 million tons of agricultural products are cultivated in the province annually.
