BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 17. The current rapeseed harvesting season in Iran's North Khorasan Province (north-eastern Iran), which began on March 28, 2023, ended on July 16, 2023, said Jalil Ramazani, the head of Central Union of Rural And Agricultural Cooperatives of Iran’s branch in North Khorasan Province, Trend reports.

“In total, 509 tons of rapeseed were purchased from local farmers under a guarantee in the province during the current season,” he said.

According to Ramazani, the value of rapeseed purchased in the province was 106 billion rials (about $2.52 million). Of that, 86 billion rials (about $2.05 million) was paid to farmers, while the remaining 20 billion rials (about $476,000) will be paid to farmers in the near future.

The official also pointed out that rapeseed was planted on 660 hectares of land in North Khorasan Province, and 970 tons of rapeseed were expected to be harvested for this season.

Meanwhile, in the last year (March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023), 816 tons of rapeseed were purchased from farmers under a guarantee in North Khorasan Province.

Reportedly, rapeseed has been planted on 100,000 hectares of land in Iran for the current season. In Iran, 1 kg of rapeseed is bought for 220,000 rials (about $5.23) under a guarantee this season. In total, 180,000 tons of rapeseed are expected to be harvested in Iran this year.

On average, about 1 million tons of vegetable oils were consumed in Iran per year. Of that, 10 percent is met by domestic production, while 90 percent by imports.

Iran plans to meet 70 percent of vegetable oil consumption through domestic production until 2025.
