Transit of goods via Iran’s Sarakhs Shushtari border customs skyrockets

BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 6. Iran’s Sarakhs Shushtari border customs, which connects the country with Turkmenistan and Central Asia, witnessed a remarkable surge in cargo transit in the first eight months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through November 21, 2023), said Mohammad Ali Kiyani, the director general of the mentioned customs office, Trend reports.

The director general noted that the transit volume increased by 382 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching over 920,000 tons.

He added that the transited goods included gasoline, sulfur, legumes, household appliances, construction materials, pharmaceuticals, and more. They were mainly shipped from Russia and Central Asia to India, China, Pakistan and other countries.

Iran’s total cargo transit in the past eight months was about 11 million tons, which shows a 19.5 percent growth year-on-year.

Sarakhs Shushtari border customs is located on the border of Iran and Turkmenistan. This border customs is one of the key points of trade between Iran and Central Asia.
