Ukraine’s President urges Russia to describe reasons of refusal to fulfill inter-governmental gas memorandum

Ukraine, Kiev, Jan. 13 /corr. Trend Z.Novsvitski/ Russia must describe the reasons for refusal to fulfill the gas memorandum, signed in October 2008 by the prime ministers of Ukraine and Russia, the President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko stated at the press conference in Kiev on Jan. 13.

"If Russia rejects the memorandum, then it must notify of it. Only to describe reasons, why the agreement, which was reached and fixed in bilateral document is annulled today," said Yushchenko.

In addition, he emphasized that Ukraine was prepared for gradual transfer to the market price of the gas, that was also specified in the appropriate memorandum.

On Oct. 2, 2008, the Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko and Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin signed the memorandum, according to which Gazprom and Naftogaz Ukraine conclude direct agreement on gas supply to Ukraine. In this case, the price of the gas, bought by Ukraine in Russia, and tariff on the transit of the gas through the territory of Ukraine must be increased to the level of European during three years.

On Jan. 12 the President of Russia Dmitriy Medvedev stated that the clauses of memorandum on gas co-operation between the governments of Russia and Ukraine dated October 2008 lost its force and can not be basis for further negotiations.
