"Providing conditions for reliable and stable energy supplies from Central Asia to world markets is a key factor for sustainable development, progress and prosperity in the region," Turkmen President Gurbanguli Berdimuhammedov said in Tashkent during his official visit.

Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are large natural gas producers in Central Asia.

Neighboring states are implementing joint energy projects, including the reconstruction of the Central Asia-Center gas pipeline system and construction of the Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline.

The Turkmen president thanked his Uzbek counterpart Islam Karimov for supporting Ashgabat's initiatives to enhance international energy cooperation and promote energy security, the Turkmen state television channel reported.

Uzbekistan was one of the first countries to support the UN General Assembly Resolution on the Reliable and Stable Transit of Energy Sources and Its Role in Ensuring Sustainable Development and International Cooperation.

Karimov said Uzbekistan plans to take part in the international conference on the UN resolution in Ashgabat in April 2009.
