The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Investment Bank and the German Bank for Reconstruction provided a loan worth $260 million to Georgia to build transmission lines to connect the country to Turkey, Georgian Energy Minister Alexander Khetaguri said today.

Khetaguri said the lines will be commissioned in May 2012.

He added that work to attract investments is underway, and interest in Georgia's energy sector is growing among investors. Accordingly, the minister said, the government does not plan to take public credit for the energy sector at this stage.

"I had a pretty successful and productive visit, both in Kuwait and France," he said. "In Kuwait, I met with representatives of a local investment agency, the Finance House and the Kuwait Fund. The investment agency and the Finance House are treated as investors and the Kuwait Fund is a donor organization that gives state credit. We have received a loan for rebuilding roads, but do not consider it necessary to obtain a loan for energy."
