An oil field has been discovered on the Taisoigan firing range in the Atyrau region, Kazakh Oil and Gas Minister Sauat Mynbayev said today at a plenary meeting of the Senate in Astana.

"Apparently, there is an oil field on the Taisoigan firing range," Mynbayev said.
The Taisoigan firing range encompasses the territory allocated by the Kazakh EmbaMunaigas oil producing company for geological exploration. The range is rented by Russia's Valeri Chkalov State Flight Testing Center for testing aviation systems. Exploration work in Taisoigan started in the second half of the 1990s.
However, geological and exploration work was terminated due to testing at the firing range.

"In this regard [the discovery of oil], we are now solving the issue by talking with Russia ... if we develop and produce oil along this territory, then we will provide a space elsewhere for a firing range for the Russian Federation," Mynbayev said.
