Iran identified a new exploration target near Turkmenistan border

The National Iranian Oil Company discovered a new exploration target in Kopeh-Dagh Region in the northeast of the country and plans to start drilling of an exploration well.

The National Iranian Oil Company discovered a new exploration target in Kopeh-Dagh Region in the northeast of the country and plans to start drilling of an exploration well, SHANA reported quoting managing director of exploration in National Iranian Oil Company Seyed Mohammad Mohades as saying.

"Currently seismic operation is ongoing in 650 kilometer border area between Iran and Turkmenistan near Kopeh Dagh region while seismic operation in 170 kilometer of area has been completed," he said.

The National Iranian Oil Company plans to install a rig for drilling wells in Kopeh Dagh region and decides over hydrocarbon, oil and gas reserves in northeastern region of Iran by the end of the Fifth Development Plan (2010-2015).

He underlined two sedimentary regions of Khazar and Kopeh Dagh on eastern sideline of Caspian Sea in Golestan province have been under exploration drilling several times but it had no result due to non economical gas reserves .

The Karand region near border with Turkmenistan is not a joint field with this country and if the National Iranian Oil Company discovers economic hydrocarbon reserves it will continues more exploration targets in this area.

Iran possesses the world's second-largest gas reserves and third-largest oil reserves.
