The Rompetrol Group, which is wholly owned by the Kazakh state oil and gas company KazMunaiGas (KMG) started drilling a well in Romania near the Filipesti de Padure settlement for the first time using own rig, KMG reported.

The cost of investment into the project exceeds $8.5 million.

The investment is manly used for acquisition of a new high-performance rig - the first rig belonging to the company in Romania.

The rig was made by Romanian companies UPET SA and IMUT S.A. and is equipped with overhead drive of Norwegian company NorDrill. This rig can be used at a depth of 2500 meters.

Drilling operation is part of a four-year contract worth $29 million (21.7 million euros) signed between Rompetrol SA and OMV Petrom. According to the contract, OMV Petrom provides Rompetrol SA with drilling services in Romania.

Rompetrol is a large holding company. Most of its operations and assets are located in France, Romania, Spain, and Southeastern Europe. The group is active primarily in refining and marketing downstream, with additional operations in exploration, production and other services for the oil industry. It owns two oil refineries - Petromidia and Vega - and some 630 gas stations in Europe (Romania, France, Spain, Moldova, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Albania, and Georgia).

KazMunaiGas is the Kazakh national operator for hydrocarbon exploration, production, processing and transportation. The state owns 100 per cent of the company's shares.
