Georgia begins construction of new hydropower station

This week Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili will open construction of Neskra hydropower station, spokeswoman for president Manana Manjgaladze said at a briefing on Tuesday.

She said the power of Neskra hydropower station will be 210 megawatts, some $630 million will be invested in the construction, and 1,200 people will be employed. Construction will be completed by 2017.

Manjgaladze also touched upon the ongoing and planned projects of construction of hydropower stations.

She said that last week construction of Darial and Lars hydropower stations, which is part of a major project which is carried out in the field of energy.

Construction of 15 hydropower stations is also underway, which employed 2,500 people.

Manjgaladze said that construction is under way across the country, in particular, projects are being implemented in Racha, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Kakheti, Guria, Adjara. Svaneti will soon be added to this list.

By the end of 2012 construction of another ten hydropower stations will begin, where 13,000 people will be employed, said spokeswoman.
