UAE company to invest $12 billion in construction of TPPs in Turkey

The National Energy Company TAQA (United Arab Emirates) plans to invest $12 billion in the construction and modernization of thermal power plants (TPPs) in Turkey, the Hürriyet newspaper quotes the company's representative in the country, Tom Teerlynck as saying on Wednesday.

According to the report, in the first phase, the company is going to build a new thermal power plant near Afshin-Elbistan area in late 2014. The construction of the second TPP will start in the second half of 2014, Teerlynck said.

He also stressed that during the construction of thermal power plants and after their commissioning over 10,000 jobs will be created.

In January 2013, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of brown coal mining and power generation in Afshin-Elbistan.

New thermal power stations are planned to be built as part of this agreement in Afshin-Elbistan, where deposits of 40 percent of Turkey's domestic lignite is located.
