Turkish company Genel Energy actively operating in autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan, has discovered rich oil reserves on the Ber Bahr-1 block, Sabah newspaper reported on Friday.

According to the report, oil was discovered at a depth of 3933 metres as a result of drilling operations on the block which began in May last year. 2.1 million barrels of oil per day will be produced at the field.

It is reported that 40 per cent of the deposit belongs to the Turkish Genel Energy Company, 40 per cent to the British Gulf Keystone and the remaining 20 per cent to the Regional Government of the Kurdish Autonomy.

Previously, Genel Energy declared its plans to start importing oil via a pipeline from the Kurdish Autonomous Region to Turkey next year.

To date, Turkey receives oil from the Kurdish autonomy in small quantities by transporting tankers.

Earlier, officials of the Iraqi government criticised the cooperation of Kurdish autonomy and Turkey in the field of energy calling it illegal.

According to BP, the oil reserves in the Kurdish Autonomous Region in northern Iraq are estimated at 45 billion barrels.
