The use of methane, which is harnessed from biomass processing plants in landfills can partially meet the demand for electricity in Azerbaijan, according to a report from the official website of Azerbaijan's State Agency for Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources.

According to the report, the source of biomass based fuels is industry, agriculture, as well as household and other wastes. The country has a great biogas potential because of the large amount of urban waste.

As it is noted in the report, there are over 200 waste utilization polygons, which cover an area of 900 hectares. Around 6-6.5 million cubic meters of solid household waste per year is produced in the country. For its part, this creates great opportunities for the use of methane, which is formed during waste processing.

It is possible to meet electricity demand by constructing small Thermal Power Stations by using methane, which is collected in these polygons," the report said.
