Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov.17

By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Three Iranian petrochemical companies will buy ethane that is produced in the South Pars gas field.

Kavian, Jam, and Morvarid petrochemical plants signed a contract with South Pars Gas Company to buy 3,840 metric tons of ethane per day by 2023, Iran's IRNA news agency reported on November 17.

The chief use of ethane is in the chemical industry production of ethene (ethylene) by steam cracking.

By completion of all phases of Iran's South Pars gas field, it will produce 650,000 barrels of gas condensates, 6.7 million tons of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and four million tons of ethane per day.

South Pars is part of a wider gas field that is shared with Qatar. The larger field covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which are in Iran's territorial waters (South Pars) in the Persian Gulf. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers, referred to as the North Dome, are in Qatar's territorial waters.
