Turkey’s Cengiz Holding is in talks with Russia on partnership in the construction of marine hydraulic structures for the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in the south of Turkey, head of the board of directors of Cengiz Holding, Mehmet Cengiz said Oct. 21, Anadolu Agency reported.

“The Russians need a partner and we are discussing the conditions,” Cengiz said. “However, our company won’t be able to cope with such work alone, either. The work may be held with the support of other companies. We will clarify this issue before early 2017.”

The intergovernmental agreement between Russia and Turkey on cooperation in construction and operation of Turkey’s first nuclear power plant Akkuyu near the city of Mersin in southern Turkey was signed in 2010.

The project's cost nears $20 billion. The Akkuyu power plant is projected to generate about 35 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year.
