Tajikistan begins electricity export to Uzbekistan

Tajikistan after a nine-year break began the planned supply of electricity to Uzbekistan from the Regar power substation on April 2, the press service of the state national energy company of Tajikistan "Barki Tojik" announced on April 3.

According to the information, the export of electricity began at 17:05 (GMT 5+) over a 220-kilovolt line.

At the initial stage, the daily export volume will be 672,000 kWh and will further increase in the future. According to the recent intergovernmental agreements, Tajikistan will export up to 1.5 billion kWh of electricity to the neighboring country in total.

The price of each kilowatt of the Tajik electricity exported to the neighboring state is 2 cents.

The state energy holding also noted that a second 220-kV power transmission line is going to be commissioned to increase the volume of electricity supply to Uzbekistan.

According to "Barki Tojik", the country currently produces about 37 million kWh per day, including 284,000 kWh being exported to Afghanistan for over 4 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Tajikistan plans to increase the export of electricity to Afghanistan by 200 million kWh in 2018. The country exported 1.3 billion kWh of electricity to Afghanistan last year. The figure is planned to be increased to 1.5 billion kWh.

According to experts, Tajikistan can export up to 5 billion kWh of electricity in summers. Seasonal recipients of Tajik electricity are Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan - 1.5-2 billion kWh.

Earlier, an agreement on the export of Tajik electricity to Uzbekistan was signed. The export of electricity has to amount up to 1.5 billion kWh. However, the details of the deal, including the date and the cost of the supply, were not disclosed.
