The world community is very closely following the oil and gas projects being realized by Azerbaijan, Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum Yury Sentyurin told reporters in Baku May 30.
Sentyurin added that these projects are of great interest to the European market.
"These projects were not easy and it took many years to implement them,” he added. “The results of these efforts were presented to the world community by commissioning the first stage of the Southern Gas Corridor and they are impressive.”
“For the first time in history, the gas from the Caspian region has direct access to consumers in Turkey and Europe,” Sentyurin said. “I think that taking into account the interest of the European consumer and the decrease in gas production in Europe, new sources of this energy source, having a great demand, will be required.”
“The Caspian region and Azerbaijan offer such an opportunity,” he said. “We will further assess its scale in the next few years."
The commissioning ceremony of the first stage of the Southern Gas Corridor project was held in Baku May 30.
The Southern Gas Corridor is one of the priority projects for the EU and provides for the transportation of 10 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian region through Georgia and Turkey to Europe.
At an initial stage, the gas to be produced as part of the Stage 2 of development of Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field is considered as the main source for the Southern Gas Corridor projects. Other sources can also connect to this project at a later stage.
