To date, STAR oil refinery has processed 4.5 million tons of oil, said Director General of the refinery Mesut Ilter at a press conference, Trend reports Oct. 10.

Ilter added that the refinery built by Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR in Aliaga town in Turkey began to fully operate in September 2019.

The director general said that the refinery had its first sale in January 2019, and so far the refinery has processed 4.5 million tons of oil. “By the end of this year, this figure is planned to be increased to 8 million tons,” Ilter noted.

Ilter emphasized that along with meeting the needs of the domestic market, the Star refinery exports its products to the countries of the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.

“The long-term perspective of the refinery is to fully sell its products in the domestic market,” Ilter said. “The refinery alone provides 25 percent of Turkey’s refined oil needs. Jet fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), along with 4.8 million tons of diesel fuel and 1.6 million tons of naphtha, are produced at the refinery with total refining capacity of 10 million tons. Star’s production capacity is 214,000 barrels of oil per day.”

The director general added that diesel and aviation fuel, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and petroleum coke are also being delivered to the market.

“Star refinery will supply Istanbul Airport with most of the fuel produced, and there will be other airports among Star’s customers as well,” Ilter said.

It was also noted that Turkey’s annual need for jet fuel is about five million tons. The expansion of the tourism sector and the emergence of such a major consumer as the new Istanbul Airport will increase this need to 6-6.5 million tons. It is expected that in 7-8 years, Turkey will no longer need to import jet fuel.

The opening ceremony of the Star oil refinery took place on October 19, 2018 in Izmir, Turkey.

The total refining capacity of the refinery will be 10 million tons, and Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR is the main supplier of crude oil for the refinery. The refinery will significantly reduce the dependence of Turkey on imports of petrochemical products.

The refinery worth $6.3 billion, built by SOCAR on the territory of Petkim petrochemical complex, will produce 1.6 million tons of naphtha, 1.6 million tons of aviation fuel, 4.8 million tons of low-sulfur diesel, 700,000 tons of petroleum coke, 420,000 tons of mixed xylene and 160,000 tons of sulfur.
