SOCAR: Natural gas consumption by population in Azerbaijan increased in 2019

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jan. 16

Trend:

The total domestic consumption of natural gas in Azerbaijan, excluding technical costs and losses for 2019, amounted to 11.5 billion cubic meters, Trend reports referring to the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic SOCAR.

“Natural gas consumption within the country increased by almost 918 million cubic meters in 2019 or by 8.7 percent compared to 2018,” the message said.

"The reason for an increase in gas consumption is associated with an increase in production in the gas chemical industry, especially after commissioning of SOCAR’s carbamide and methanol plants, which use natural gas as raw materials," the message said.

As a result of the expansion of gas distribution infrastructure in Azerbaijan, the level of natural gas consumption among the population has grown by almost 8.5 percent.

"Azerbaijan increased the export of natural gas by 23 percent up to 11.6 billion cubic meters in 2019,” the message said. “Most of the natural gas produced by SOCAR is supplied to the domestic market."

The registered export growth is associated with an increase in production at the Shah Deniz gas condensate field operated by a consortium of international companies.

The second stage of the development of Shah Deniz Stage 2 is the starting point of the Southern Gas Corridor, through which the gas will be supplied for the first time to the European market.

As part of the second stage of the field development, 16 billion cubic meters of gas per year will be additionally produced; six billion of this volume will be supplied to Turkey while 10 billion - to Europe.

During the peak period, gas production from the Shah Deniz field will reach 26 billion cubic meters of gas per year and 120,000 barrels per day.
