Azerbaijan to further develop alternative energy sources

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 25

By Nargiz Ismayilova - Trend:

The reduction in the use of natural gas as a result of the implementation of projects in the field of alternative energy sources will positively affect the fulfillment of Azerbaijan’s obligations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the environment, Director of the Regulation of Energy Efficiency and Ecology Department of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy Alasgar Hasanov told Trend.

“The population also showed interest in this area. As a result of the installation of solar panels and collectors, the use of renewable energy sources and hot water has been expanded,” Hasanov added.

As a result of the implementation of large projects, conditions will be created to achieve progress in the development of alternative energy.

The director of the department added that the use of other renewable energy sources, including wind energy, bioenergy, geothermy, wave energy and others, is already a widespread experience in the world.

“The Ministry of Energy, jointly with international companies, conducts relevant studies in the field of the use of wind energy at sea. In case of economic efficiency, such projects can be implemented in the Caspian Sea,” Hasanov added.

“Although the processing of domestic solid waste has already been organized in Azerbaijan, other options are being considered. Research is being conducted to use the energy resources and waste of agriculture, forestry and other industries,” the director noted.

Despite the fact that economically inappropriate use of energy from geothermal sources of the country is not considered economically efficient, research in this direction also continues in conjunction with the relevant institutions.

Hasanov added that the use of wave and sea energy can be named a pilot project which will serve practical purposes throughout the world and requires technological development in order for this energy to become cost-effective and widely used on an industrial scale.
