Energy efficiency improves in Azerbaijan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 17

Azerbaijan’s energy efficiency increased as a result of the corresponding reconstruction and modernization of the energy sector in 2019, Trend reports referring to a report on the activity of the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers in 2019.

“As a result of this work, the difference between the potential capacity of the electric power system (6,012 megawatts) and the installed capacity (6,817 megawatts) decreased,” the report said.

According to the report, the maximum peak power increased up to 3,879 megawatts and Azerbaijan became the leading country in the region exporting electricity.

“Some 26.1 billion kilowatt-hours of energy were generated in the country in 2019, which is 842.7 million more than in 2018, and 1.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity were exported in 2019,” the report said.

“Electricity consumption increased in 2019 compared to 2018 by 819.4 million kilowatt-hours and amounted to 22.5 billion kilowatt-hours,” the report said.

As reported, 92.7 percent of the generated electricity accounts for thermal power plants, six percent - hydroelectric power plants, 1.3 percent - renewable energy sources.
