BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 4
By Tamilla Mammadova - Trend:
Georgia's energy companies have run into problems due to the force majeure situation in the country caused by the global pandemic, said Giorgi Pangani, a member of the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission (GNERC), Trend reports citing Georgian media.
Pangani noted that their electricity consumption has reduced by 30-40 percent, which has led to serious problems.
"We do not have updated data for April, but according to operative information, there is a very serious decrease at both Telasi and Energo-Pro Georgia companies. As for March, Energo-Pro Georgia faced a sharp reduction of more than 100 million kWh compared to the previous year. If the consumption in March 2019 was 486 million kWh, this March, it was 370 million kWh," he said.
According to him, April will probably be even worse, as the whole economy was working in the first half of March, while many entities are closed in April.
"Everyone has the impression that energy companies have an inexhaustible resource; on the contrary, they are somewhat vulnerable for such a force majeure situation," Pangani said.
He stressed, the companies have no additional income, and they have a tariff that is calculated for the specific consumption.
"We don’t want the tariff to be high. We want the electricity supply to be continuous, and we want all companies to have equal conditions. It is very difficult to achieve that, especially in the current difficult situation,” Pangani explained.
