Axpo intends to grow in gas trading, reduce dependence on electricity

BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 23

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

Swiss Axpo company intends to grow in gas trading in order to reduce its dependence on electricity, the company told Trend.

“The global gas trading business in general is increasingly important for Axpo Group. For instance, Axpo trades and supplies LNG to customers in most European countries and on other continents as well. We are currently seeing a continuous expansion of our business activities in the international gas trading sector. Axpo is now a medium-sized player in the European market with a physical delivery volume of over 100 TWh, both for third parties and for its own use,” said the company.

In addition, the company said that an important milestone this year is the opening of TAP, which had been initiated by Axpo Solutions’ predecessor EGL years ago, and of which Axpo is a 5 percent shareholder.

“In regard to the Corona pandemic: For sensitive infrastructure areas (nuclear power plants, grid control centre, computer centres etc.), the specific pandemic plans at Axpo Group have been activated and protective measures have been implemented consistently. This also applies to power plant optimisation and dispatching. The aim is to maintain the safe operation of the infrastructures even with a limited workforce. Electricity production of Axpo Group remains relatively unaffected in the short term due to hedging most of our production for the longer term,” said Axpo.

As the largest producer of renewable energies in Switzerland, Axpo is making sustainable investments in the technologies of the future. The company’s focus is on hydropower, wind and biomass at optimal locations. On its way into this future, Axpo is thus securing a consistently sustainable and climate-friendly energy supply for its customers in Switzerland with its proven nuclear power plants.
