Shell Kazakhstan updates on its operations amid COVID-19

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 10

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

Shell Kazakhstan’s operational performance has not been affected by transition to a remote operations mode, Shell representative told Trend.

Shell has already taken a decision effective July 1, 2020 to send some of its personnel to home-countries given developments related to COVID-19.

“Health and safety of our staff is the highest priority for Shell. Shell confirms that at the beginning of July non-essential seconded business personnel and families from Atyrau (NCOC) and Nur-Sultan were sent to home-countries where borders were open, due to developments related to COVID-19 in Kazakhstan then,” the official said.

Shell said the company's staff members continue their duties remotely, and this has not impacted Shell Kazakhstan’s operational performance.

Talking when the company is considering to switch back to on-field operations for these staff, the company official said that this is yet to be considered.

“Shell Kazakhstan will consider returning expatriate staff to Kazakhstan based on a number of criteria including continuous improvements in epidemiological situation in the country, Government requirements, and group guidance,” the official said.

Shell has a stake in North Caspian Operating Company which is a Kazakhstan-based Kashagan Field operator.

Developed with an estimated investment of $55 billion, Kashagan phase one represents the biggest international investment in Kazakhstan to date. Developed in harsh offshore environment, it is also considered to be one of the world’s most technically challenging oil and gas project completed so far.

Shell also takes part in development of Karachaganak which is one of the largest oil and gas condensate fields in Kazakhstan. Karachaganak Petroleum Operating produces oil and gas from the Karachaganak field. The shares in the consortium are as follows: Eni - 29.25 percent, Royal Dutch Shell - 29.25 percent, Chevron - 18 percent, Lukoil - 13.5 percent, and KazMunayGas - 10 percent.
