BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct. 22

By Klavdiya Romakayeva - Trend:

The construction of power transmission line between Uzbekistan’s Surkhan and Afghanistan’s Puli – Khumri will increase the supply of electricity from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan by 70 percent, Trend reports referring to the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan.

An agreement to finance the construction of Surkhan – Puli-Khumri power transmission line was signed between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Afghanistan on October, 21.

The document provides for the allocation of $110 million. The bulk of the funds will be directed to construction work, which is planned to be carried out by Uzbek contractors.

The corresponding contract for the construction of this transmission line between Uzbekistan’s National Electric Networks JSC and Afghanistan’s Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) will be signed in the near future.

The construction of the Surkhan – Puli-Khumri power transmission line will increase the supply of electricity from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan up to six billion kWh per year. The power line will connect Kabul (the capital of Afghanistan) to the unified energy system of Central Asia.

The agreement on the construction of the power transmission line was signed during the visit of the head of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, to Uzbekistan in December 2017. The payback period of the project is 12 years. The transmission capacity of the line will be 1,000 MW, that is, it will be possible to transmit over 24 million kWh per day.

The total cost of the project amounts to $150 million, of which $118 million will be invested by the Afghan side (of which $110 are loans from ADB), and $32 million will be invested by the Uzbek side.
