The Khudafarin dam on the Araz River on the Iran-Azerbaijan border will soon be filled with water and both countries will benefit from it, the Executive Director of East Azerbaijan Regional Water Company Yousef Ghaffarzadeh told Trend.
According to him, there is currently 98-99 percent progress in physical work at the Khudafarin dam. The Khudafarin dam is located 196 km from the Araz dam and has a capacity of 1.6 billion cubic meters.
Ghaffarzadeh added that two power plants, with generation capacity of 100 megawatt-hours of electricity each, are being built at the Khudafarin dam. One of these stations will generate electricity for Iran and the other for Azerbaijan.
"When the construction of the Khudafarin and Giz Galasi water reservoirs and hydro junctions began, all the work was carried out by Iran, as the territories on the Azerbaijani side were a conflict zone. Azerbaijani officials monitored the implementation of the project and were informed about it," he said.
The director noted that it is hoped that the projects on the Araz River, especially hydroelectric power plants, will be completed soon with the participation of Azerbaijan.
"A joint commission has been set up between the two countries to determine the costs of construction of the Khudafarin and Giz Galasi dams and hydro junctions," he said.
