Iran shares data on power generation capacity of HPPs

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jan. 17

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

Iran's Hydroelectric Power Plants (HPPs) could generate 9,000 megawatt-hours of electricity, if the rainfall is normal for the remaining 9 months of the current water year (September 23, 2021 through September 22, 2022), Executive Director of Iran Water & Power Resources Development Company Hassan Razavi said, Trend reports citing Iranian Energy Ministry.

The director noted that the electricity generation capacity of Iran's HPPs is 12,200 megawatt-hours per year.

“Due to the drought, electricity generation of HPPs is estimated to reduce by 25-30 percent this year, compared to last Iranian year,” he added.

According to Razavi, the HPPs’ electricity generation for the last water year (September 22, 2020 through September 22, 2021) also reduced by 37 percent, compared to the previous water year due for the same reason.

The director also said that water resources in Iran have recently improved as a result of high rainfall, and about 2 billion cubic meters of water inflow Iran's dams. As a result, the water shortage problem of hydroelectric power plants has been solved to some extent.
