Gazprom likely to work on developing Iran's gas infrastructure - Chamber of Commerce

TEHRAN, Iran, August 2. Russia's Gazprom is likely to develop Iran's infrastructure for gas export to Europe, the chairman of the energy commission of the Iran Chamber of Commerce Hamidreza Salehi told Trend.

Gazprom's investment contract in Iran's gas sector should specify whether it is for building pipelines or LNG export, therefore building infrastructure for Iran's gas pipeline to Europe via the Black Sea or the North Sea should be in the contract, said the official.

Salehi responded to rumors of Gazprom's investment in Iran's LNG project, saying that the company has little experience in converting natural gas to LNG and shipment, so Iran should wait to see if the Russians are serious about investing.

"Europe is a gas and energy market and while the EU wants to transform Iran into an alternative energy supplier, Iranian officials never decided to export gas to Europe, perhaps unintentionally or due to alignment with Russia," he noted.

Salehi pointed out that changes in the energy basket and the Ukraine conflict will affect Iran's decision to enter Europe's energy markets, and cooperation with Russia might make it possible.

"Iran can not compete against Russia in gas exports since it needs infrastructure, but the country can use the opportunities to export gas from Turkmenistan to Europe or transfer gas from Iraq to Syria and then to the Mediterranean," Salehi said.

The National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and Gazprom signed a memorandum of understanding worth around $40 billion. Gazprom will help NIOC in the development of the Kish and North Pars gas fields and also six other oil fields.
