World Bank Interested in Participating in Treatment of Oil-Polluted Areas in   Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend / The World Bank intends to participate in projects relating to the AZ President's decree on the Complex Action Plan on Improvement of Ecological Situation in 2006-2010. The announcement was made by representatives of the WB Department for Europe and Central Asia during the meeting with Rovnag Abdullayev, the President of the State oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR).

Representatives of the bank noted the necessity for strengthening the potential treatment of oil-polluted areas and the possibility of cooperation among the WB, the Azerbaijan government and the SOCAR in the establishment of a unified program for ecological treatment in these areas.

Abdullayev noted that SOCAR had made serious arrangements for the implementation of this large-scale ecological program, defined the volumes, designed maps for the general concept.

SOCAR President stressed that work over prevention of pollution, treatment of lands and re-cultivation should be carried out simultaneously. The Action program of onshore oil and gas producing units is being clarified to develop a feasible study. Furthermore, work over re-settlement of people residing in the areas in need of treatment is also underway. An ecology department has been established at SOCAR for the resolution of these issues.
