Data on payment cards issuance in Kazakhstan revealed

The overall number of payment cards in circulation in Kazakhstan amounted to 37.8 million cards over the period from Jan. through Apr. 2020, of which 54 percent (20.5 million) were active, Trend reports with reference to the data of Kazakhstan’s National Bank.

The data said that the number of payment cards and their holders has been growing at the Kazakh payment card market since the beginning of 2020.

Payment cards issuers issued two million cards in Apr. 2020, 45 percent (891,000 cards) of which were issued in Almaty city. Over 70,000 payment cards were issued during the emergency state period in Kazakhstan.

The 1Q2020 results said that over 96,300 entrepreneurs placed 160,700 POS-terminals in 133,100 trade outlets. Currently, 12,000 ATMs operate in Kazakhstan, of which 1,500 ATMs support the biometric identification of customers.

Some 6.3 million money transfers worth 53.8 trillion tenge ($130.7 billion) were carried out in Kazakhstan using payment systems of Kazakhstan's National Bank in Apr. 2020, which is 73.6 percent more in volume and 12.4 percent less in value than in Mar. 2020.

On average, 285,900 transactions worth 2.4 trillion tenge ($5.8 billion) were carried out daily.

The volume of plastic cards issued in Kazakhstan amounted to 37.8 million cards as of May 1, 2020, and 54.2 percent on them were used in Apr. 2020.
