Number of debit cards holders increases in Kazakhstan

The number of plastic cards in circulation amounted to 44.2 million cards as of Oct. 1, 2020, which is 44.8 percent more than as of Oct. 1, 2019 (30.5 million cards), Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s National Bank.

Of the total number of cards in circulation, 33.8 million cards were debit cards, 8.8 million cards were credit cards, and 1.5 million were other types of cards.

Furthermore, of the total number of cards in circulation, 24.7 million were used over as of Oct. 1, 2020, compared to 18.4 million cards last year, which indicates a 34.1 percent increase year-on-year.

The largest number of debit cards in circulation was registered in Almaty city (8.8 million cards). Almaty city is followed by the Turkestan region, including Shymkent city (3.6 million cards), and Nur-Sultan city (3.2 million cards).

In turn, the greatest number of credit cards also was registered in Almaty city (2.6 million cards), which also is followed by the Turkestan region (966,000 cards) and Nur-Sultan city (934,000 cards).

Some 37.2 million cardholders were registered in Kazakhstan as of Oct. 1, 2020, which indicates an increase of 36.7 percent year-on-year compared to 27.2 million on Oct. 1, 2019.

The total number of payment systems operating in Kazakhstan as of Aug. 1, 2020, consists of 17 systems, including those of the National Bank, systems of money transfers, and systems of plastic cards.
