BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 25. Iran is exploring the possibility of building new hydroelectric power plants that could generate around 1,200 megawatts of electricity, said Mashallah Tabe Jamaat, the Deputy Director of Iran Water and Power Resources Development, Trend reports.
The official noted that some decisions about the construction of these plants are expected to be made soon.
He also said that the company is currently building HPPs with a capacity of 4,000 megawatts of electricity in the country. These projects are expected to be finished in the next few years.
“Since its inception (1989), the Water and Energy Resources Development Company has been involved in the construction and operation of Hydroelectric Power Stations with a capacity of about 9,000 megawatts in the country,” the deputy added.
According to him, the country has the potential to build small-scale hydropower plants with a total capacity of 200 megawatts and medium-sized hydropower plants with a total capacity of 430 megawatts.
Tabe Jamaat expressed his hope that these plants would be built with the investment of private companies.
The deputy director noted that the power generation capacity of Iran’s HPPs is 12,000 megawatts and accounts for about 15 percent of the country’s power generation capacity.
At present, the power generation capacity of all of Iran's power plants, including thermal, hydroelectric, nuclear, renewable, etc., is approximately 91,000 megawatt-hours. Of this, 82 percent is accounted for by the country’s thermal power plants.
