BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 20. The European Commissioner for Climate Action Wopke Hoekstra has arrived in Baku for one-day talks, Trend reports via the chief negotiator of COP29, Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Yalchin Rafiyev.

"On June 20, we'll discuss general, key climate action issues that can be addressed between the EU and Azerbaijan. Specifically, the meeting's agenda may include reducing greenhouse gas emissions and implementing low-carbon projects, which are overseen by Commissioner Hoekstra," Rafiyev pointed out.

According to him, the commissioner will meet today in Baku with the President of COP29, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Mukhtar Babayev, and the COP29 chairing team.

According to the European Commission, Hoekstra is also scheduled to meet with the Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan Parviz Shahbazov, the Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, and to exchange views with Azerbaijani civil society representatives.

Hoekstra wrote on his X page today that he will spend the entire day in Baku "discussing COP29, priorities, and climate ambitions with government and civil society representatives."

"We need to implement all the goals of the global energy transition, formulated in consensus at the COP in the UAE, including through new NDCs (nationally determined contributions), and support this through ambitious climate financing," the commissioner said.

To note, Hoekstra will serve as the European Commissioner for Climate Action until the end of October 2024.
